I just got a 5 gallon tank for one of my betta's and I was wondering what fish would be good companions for it, I have 3 commets but they prolly would pick on him because they're bullies. My tank is heated and has a filter and yeah. The male I'm thinking about putting in there doesn't seem overly agressive and I think he woul leave other fish alone.

3 comets NEVER would fit in a 5 gallon tank...the rule for goldfish is 15gal for the first, and 10 gallons for every one after. Aside from that, tropical fish and goldfish do not mix. There are not many fish that do well with a betta, especially in a small tank. Ok takmates are snails, shrimp, Otocinclus catfish, and some smaller corydoras...but with the cories you'd really only want to put 2 in a 5 gallon tank, and the best for that is a mated pair. I have a 5 gallon with a snail, a mated pair of cories and a betta...I used to have an oto in there with him, but Pig decided one day he didn't like him and bit him in half...ok then, no more otos for you. here's another thread where we talked about putting tankmates with bettas healthybetta.proboards19.com/index.cgi?board=bettadiscussion&action=display&thread=1101920711

ok, thanks for replying. I also have a 10gal that I didn't mention, maybe I'll get the cory's for in there and have one of my males with just a snail in the other one. Which leads to the question, how should you take care of a snail? (I've never had one before)

the best place to find out about caring for a snail is applesnail.net
they are pretty easy...they just need food every few days, and they will eat bottom feeder food.
