As you might already know, I just got a betta fish yesterday. I bought a kit for him, and it came with a bowl, food, chlorine cleaner, and a plant. I would like to know if I need to get a little cave or something for him to sleep in. Any comments would be appreciated!! ;D

Hi! I'm a newbie, too! We just got our Betta on Saturday, and his name is Horatio. I have been flipping out the past couple of days, but finally calmed down thanks to the guidance of the good people here.
I can tell you that I have different little caves in the 5 gallon tank with Horatio, and he has adopted one as his sleeping den. I'm glad we bought it because he seems to enjoy it so.
Take care! sandy

no, they will sleep anywhere, he should have night time though, lights off for at least the time that you sleep he has a plant for privacy, thats all thats important, in fact my male bettas wont even use hideys, they like their plants congratulations to both of you

It is not necessary for your betta to have a hidey, but some really seem to enjoy it, plus I like having something in there to pretty up the tank some more. Two of mine really like their hideys, and my other two never use them. What I use in mine are: a votive candle holder made of blue glass (walmart 44cents), a small plant pot, a hampster tube from a pet store (about 5$), and a rock tunnel made for aquariums. If you do decide to get something, make sure that it will not rip the fish's fins. The best way to do this is to get a pair of panyhose and run it over the object. If it snags the pantyhose, it will rip the bettas fins.

my boys like short plants (if you get silk aquarium plants, you can cut their stems down and reglue them with aquarium sealant to make them shorter) with broad, flat leaves. most silk plants made for ponds are good. they sit on the highest leaves, near the surface every once in a while during the day, and they'll sleep either under the plant, or sometimes on the plant.
