The Healthy Betta site and many, many people recommend aquarium salt with every water change. Use about 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. per gallon, only with the new water at water change time. It says right on the package that it is for freshwater fish. It adds electrolytes, helps with gill function, and helps guard against bacteria, fungus, and parasites. Some pet stores will tell you that you don't need it, but I think just about everyone here uses it and most betta websites recommend it. The only time you will not use aquarium salt is if your betta becomes bloated due to illness because the salt will cause him to retain more fluid. Also, if you are ever using a medication that contains sodium, it is not a good idea to add salt at that time. Using the recommended amount definitely will NOT kill your betta, and it is a good thing to add as part of your regular water conditioning routine.

Aquarium salt is not the same kind of salt used for saltwater fish. It's safe to use, even with betta fry.
