I have 3 Bettas-2 males (Sapphire & Flame) and 1 female (Rainbow). Rainbow is alone in a 10 gallon tank with lighthood, fliter, heater, & bubblewand on low bubbles. Flame is in a 20 gallon tank with 4 glo-lite tetras and the same setup as Rainbow. Both Rainbow & Flame seem to love to try to swim into their filters where the water comes back into the tank. Thankfully the water keeps them from getting into the filter. Does anyone elses Bettas do this? Should I be worried? Thanks!

Hi, As long as they seem healthy and happy and are unable to actually get in to the filter I wouldn't think that would be anything to worry about. I've never had a filtered tank for my bettas but have had a ten gallon tank with a filter and balloon mollies. I often caught my balloon mollies playing in the current from the filter. They seemed to enjoy it. Take care.

I agree - as long as they continue to be happy and healthy and cannot hurt themselves, it's ok to let them "play."
I had one betta, Charlie, when I was in college, he liked to actually wrap around the filter hose and let it suck on his fins! The first time he did this I about freaked out (he was in a 20 gallon tank with a couple other smaller fish so had to have the filter).
I watched him closesly and he was not tearing his fins and he was not sick so I let him play.
Strange bettas! hehehe

sam was in a 10 gallon and he would jump when he'd play in the filter but i dont think he was trying to jump in, i always thought of when i see the salmon jumping against the current when he would do it, i think he was just having fun strange how some bettas love current and most others dont. oh well, our guys definitely have very indivual personalities. i wouldnt worry, theyre probably just having fun and getting excited

lol my first betta, Merlyn, would do this. I think he just liked the exercise and the challenge. He'd always stare at the filter funny as if to say "HA! I finally can reach you!" because he wasn't strong enough to touch the filter where the water came out. ;D

someone asked a question similar to this on bettatalk, and faith's answer is that you basically have nothing to worry about. They're just getting their kicks!

i have actually found 3 different girls in my HOB filter in their 30 gallon ... one i found 3 times in there .... here and i have all but put betta barbwire (nylon stocking material) where the water retruns to the tank ...i finally gave up on trying to keep them out of it they come and go several times a day from the filter and funny they seem to always come shooting out of it when its feeding time ...guess they can smell the food in the return water and the smell tells them time to go downstream ... they havent ever been hurt in the filter but its pretty small in there and would be crowded for 3 girls at the same time i'd think but they dont seem to mind ...lol ... I am very glad to see that I am not the only one with Bettas that enjoy playing in their filter. It scared me to death the 1st time I saw it.
Since I started this post, I bought 2 red claw crabs to put in my 20 gal tank to help keep the bottom clean. A lot of good that did me. They are both living very happily in the 2 filters I have on the tank. I even have to feed them in there. I tried putting them back in the tank many times and would always find them back in their filters. They seem happy.
Thanks for all the replies. I LOVE this forum and the people in it.

Well, I have to say that my Ru-Bih (a red male) actually managed to go INSIDE his filter. I could see for a while that he kept staring at the current coming out of the filter and although the holes looked too small to me, he eventually did it. I managed to take him out (he was not harmed!!!); he did it again several times until I eventually put a thin net to block the filter holes. Now he just plays with the current. I have the same set up with a different betta and he never even thought of the filter. So they definitely have different behaviors....
