I'm gonna be gone over thanksgiving break for about a week. I was just wondering how long you guys would go without feeding your bettas. I'm definitely planning on taking them home, but my mom said she read somewhere that they would be fine for a week without food. I doubt that, but would like to get your advice first. Besides, I'll miss the little guys!

I think a week is too long to go without feeding. The most I would go is three days, but even with that, i sometimes come home to a bit of fin rot. However, if you don't want to take them home, do you have someone who could come over and feed them. They would probably only need it once every other day for the week. If you change the water right before you leave, they should be fine with that.

That's cool. LIke I said, I'll be taking them home. No one is around that I would trust to feed them and not put them in each other's tanks, so I'm not gonna try that.

Mickey, You are probably better off taking them with you. They can go a week without eating and be fine, but why chance it if you don't have to?
I leave mine alone for a week every year when we go to visit my in-laws for the holidays. I clean all of the tanks right before I go and don't feed or have someone come in to feed. I've never had a problem doing this and never come home to a dead fish.

just a bit of thought here .... did you know that when bettas are shipped they are "purged" for 3 days before being shipped ? then add atleast several days in the shipping and importing time. this is done in shipping to help prevent the shipping water (a very little bit of water at that) from becomeing toxic during the time they are stuck in the tiny little bags .... also did you know that one a male betta is put into a breeding tnak after being conditioned that from that point on (atleast when he and the girl are togehter) till they fry are several days old the male bettas is normally not fed in an atempt to not put him in a "feeding frenzy" and have him start eating fry ? ... in both these cases the bettas are not fed from3- up to 10 days depending on how long it takes them to get trhu customs ...a week is a long time but remember in nature they can go atleast several days before something swims along that they can eat ... i wouldnt leave them a week with out feeding nor would i leave them with someone ..(to many people over feed because they dont have your will power to ignore most of the begging that our guys are so good at and the over feeding can cause to many problems from fouling the water to SBD and others .... best i think is to carry them home in a very calm way and then just treat them as normal .... That's cool. Thanks! Also, When I take them home, they'll be in a separated 20 gallon rectangular tank. Are there any precautions I should take when dramatically changing their environment like that? For instance, teh boys are in 2.5 gallon tanks, and Ira is in a 1 gallon. They'll be going in 5 gallons of water where they can constantly see each other. Is there conditioning I should do, or what? Just float them in jars and dump 'em in?

I would suggest that you test the ph and stuff of both the waters. You don't want to shock them with a major change. Other than that, I don't think they need to prepared for the larger tank.

When mine go from school to home and back, they get treated with the water the same way when I get them first home: first adjust to temp for 15 min, then add a bit of new water to adjust to that for 15 min, then PLUNK! Into the new tank. Haven't had any problems with that (other than losing a snail, but he was being slowly eaten by Hera anyways).
