Jasper my little Betta is as Happy as could be he built a HUGE bubble nest and seems healthy but will not eat any of his flakes or pellets I got him. His flakes say "Betta flakes" and his pellets are tropical fish . Its been only 3 days since I got him if that has anything to do with it. Oh ya another quick question should I be scooping out the food he doesn't eat I tried doing it once with one of those silk nets but it's hard to get the flakes out of the rocks. I also noticed that his tank is already getting a little Murkey. Should I change the water and wash his tank? I have only a 1 gallon tank so would it be alright to wash it more then once a week if the water does get murkey. Sorry for the long post and all the question! Im just a new Betta parent.

Hi It is not unusual for Bettas not to eat for a bit when they come to a new home. I have a betta that didnt eat for over 10 days! Keep offering food, but you must pick out any that is refused as it can cause harmful bacteria to grow. I feed my guys, Hikari Bio-Gold Pellets specifically for Bettas. You probably should go ahead and change the water as you mentioned that you might not have removed all of the uneaten food. For a 1 gallon, you can only go a week AT THE LONGEST before doing a complete water change. Are you washing with soap? If so, please stop and just use very hot water to clean the tank. The soap can leave a residue which can harm your betta. Congratualtions on Jasper. I hope he stays happy and healthy!

My bettas won't touch flakes. I have the Hikari betta pellets for them, as well as freeze-dried blood worms. I know some bettas have problems with the freeze-dried stuff, but my guys are doing just fine.
My guys both ate straight away when they came home, but I've heard a lot of them won't.
And congratulations on your new fishy! They're tons of fun. Though I have to clean tanks today...that part isn't tons of fun, but it makes for happy healthy fishies. Oh well, it doesn't take all that long.
(I adore kitties but am no fan of cleaning up after them, either, when you have pets you do things whether you want to or not!)

When trying to remove food that has sunk to the bottom of the tank, I find that a turkey baster works pretty well to remove it.

Both of the bettas that I have had were picky eaters. My first betta, Sharky (RIP) loved the Hikari betta pellets. He would jump for them! It was cute. Then, when we ran out, my mom bought some cheaper pellets, and he would not touch them. Then he got fin rot and bloat, and died The betta I have now, Claudius, also wouldn't eat the pellets that we had left over from Sharky, so I bought some Nutrafin Max betta flakes and he enjoys those. I should also mention that for two weeks after Claudius was home, he wouldn't touch any food at all!
