My new CT should arrive via mail tomorrow. Is there any validity in treating him with bettamax as a "recovery med" from the stress of shipping. He's going to be in a bare QT tank for a week or so to check him out...would it be overkill to treat him too?

I wouldn't think that you would need to as long as you acclimate him properly to your water and keep him in the quarantine tank to recover for a week. I'd check the pH of the water and such that he's coming from, just to keep in mind how gradual this process may need to be. If he looks ok when you get him I'd probably wait for a day or two to check things out. That's just me though. I wouldn't use up my precious bettamax these days if I didn't have to. Good luck with the new guy!

Yes, there is, and in fact that's what it's probably best for. It doesn't so much deal with stress recovery as it is good at helping prevent disease in newly arrived fish.
However, if your fish is coming from an established breeder, then you probably don't have to worry too much about diseases. Do it if you want, as it won't end up hurting anything.
