I have my betta in a one gallon tank right now with a small apple snail.......and he seems to be ok. However, I have been reading some stuff on the net which has said that I should really have him in a 5 gallon. I know a one gallon is kinda small, but it's all I could afford for right now.....will he be ok?

As long as you keep the water clean he should be fine until you can upgrade.

I'm no betta expert, but I have picked up some good knowledge from A LOT of research on the subject. Being a poor college student, I understand the issue of wanting to give your fishy the very best vs. just not having the resources!! Polonius (my little finned friend) lives very happily in a 2-gallon tank. 5-gallon tanks are nice, but I don't think they're a must.

long term, a 1 gallon tank is not ideal. But its better than a .25gallon cube. Personally, I don't like to keep my guys in anything smaller than 2.5 gallons permanently.

I'm getting crazy - just bought this 72L (19G) tank today, now it's cycle time Maybe I'll add one male betta or maybe some females to it along other fishes, but I'm afraid that the tank height (40cm) will be too much for them. I'll use a Whisper 20. Not sure about decoration and other features yet - not even who will live there... maybe a frenatus or a botia or anything as colourful as a betta and some other smaller fishes.

I don't think a 40cm (15.75 inch) depth would be too much for them. Some people use 29 gallon tanks (much taller) as grow-out tanks for their bettas.

and it's 40cm empty, which means it will have the gravel height and a few decorations which will be taller spots where they can stay a bit more often if needed (bettas are lazy when they want!), plus plants.
