I just wanted to share something with everyone, and see if what I've experienced is unique or not....
When I first started with bettas HBH Betta Pellets were recommended as a food staple. Many people on this forum and elsewhere have told me that Aquaculture Betta Pellets are exactly the same as HBH's product but much cheaper.
While my daughter was fishsitting over the summer she accidentally dropped the jar of HBH pellets (at first I thought she was trying to tell me she dropped it into a tank and killed my fish but no, they fell on the floor). She went to replace them and I told her to get the Aquaculture pellets since they're cheaper and also available at discount stores. She got them and the fish like them just fine, but they are MUCH larger than the HBH pellets. At least that's what I thought, but since the HBH got spilled all I had to work with was my memory. Until now!
My daughter's betta has come to live with me - he got bored and lonely in a dorm room (she's rather a social person and isn't home often ). She brought me all of his stuff which included HER jar of Aquaculture pellet food. Which she bought at the same discount store on the same day she bought mine.
Guess what!!! HER pellets are smaller, just like the HBH ones I remember. Opening the two jars side by side you would not think it was the same food - my pellets are at least twice the size of hers! The labels, product name, ingredients, everything is exactly the same, but the pellets in the two jars are very definitely different sizes.
I just wanted to share this with everyone - I'm not sure if this is just an off-brand inconsistency or if other foods can vary this much in their basic characteristics...but with the large pellets I only fed one or two, with the "regular" ones 3 or 4 is more average.
