I see lots of mentions of people giving their bettas hidey holes, but what do you use for this? I checked out my pet store thoroughly and all they have for "decor" is scratchy castles and such. I'm afraid to just stick a glass votive in the tank because how do I know if it's "aqaurium safe"? Any suggestions or things you all have used successfully?

I have had very good luck with terracotta flower pots and the really small ones only cost 59cents each here. just make sure that your betta cannot get stuck in the drain hole cause believe me they will try to fit. I usually bury the back of the pot. And only use brand new ones otherwise there may be yucky chemicals in the pot. To clean them, I soak a pot for at least 2 days in clean water and then the stickers and glue come right off then I rinse in super hot water and allow to totally dry before they go in a tank.
a votive holder would work perfectly, but again make it a new one that has never had a candle burnt in it and if you have a dishwasher, you should run it through with NO soap or rinse agent but super hot water from your tap would clean it as well.
Glass is always a good bet because unlike plastic, it can't really 'soak up' chemicals, and be very careful with any porous materials.
Good luck with your tank decor!

Some of the "traditional" aquarium decorations (castles etc) can be made betta-safe. I use a fine grade sandpaper to smooth all rough edges and test with panty hose before putting it in the tank.

I have used a wide-mouth drinking glass. It's clear, but my boys haven't minded - especially if I put it under a large leaf!

I leaned a small peice of slate against the side of the tank. My betta loves to swim around it and hide behind and under it.
