Hi! I am a new betta owner (less than 12 hours). I have a half gallon bowl that I promise to change every 3 days until I can get a bigger tank. I have been reading a lot and know they need protein. We have packages of raw frozen shrimp in our freezer. I am so tempted to thaw out one and cut the tiniest piece and try and feed it to him. So would this be ok? Or not, and why. Thank you. LJ

I can't see why it would be a problem. Just make sure to remove it if he doesn't eat it so it doesn't rot and set the water quality out of whack.

Um... I wouldn't try it just yet. They're not the same kind of shrimp that bettas eat, anyhow.

Well, I did it. I took out one shrimp from the bag. I cut off a small piece as the shrimp was still frozen. I cut that piece into several smaller pieces.. put the rest in a baggie, keeping one minute piece out. I then split up that piece into tinier pieces, and used a toothpick. The first tiny piece got off the pick and he snapped it up. The second tiny piece stuck and he grabbed it off the toothpick... ate it all up.. He looks pretty happy to me... this one small shrimp should last a month or more if I just keep it all frozen and only thaw out a smidgen at a time... I just ran it under water with my fingers. LJ

One of our other members used to boil and feed her bettas tiny pieces of shrimp, maybe she still does. This was due to the fact that betta food was hard to come by in her country (ickyfishywishy). I would think it's probably ok to do it occasionally, but you'll definitely want to keep some variety in his diet with other foods.

Hi! I was not planning on just skipping other betta foods entirely... I think I would try this every 3 days or so.. one of these shrimps like that would last more than a month still frozen... He really seemed to enjoy it... I never knew I would be so nutty about a fish. I tell him he is a big bad boy cause he flares at me when I round the corner (did it when I came home one time, I think I scared him) and when I turn the lights out and am moving around the room...
