My betta of about 3 weeks has had a rapidly disappearing tail over the past week.
His ammonia is at 0 and pH is 7.2. He's in a two gallon tank and he eats a combination of frozen bloodworms and freeze dried brine shrimp.
I don't think it's fin rot because his fins do not have any of the dark brown/black edges I've seen with fin rot. The fins also seem to be disapprearing in medium size chunks. Only his tail is affected.
I thought that maybe he was dragging his tail along the gravel substrate, so I changed it to spherical marbles. His plant has no sharp edges. Still, the tail keeps getting smaller.
So now I'm thinking he might be biting his tail. Today I saw him chasing his tail in a circle, like a dog does when he's bored.
He's placed next to my other betta, with one panel of each of their hexagon style tanks near enough to the other to see. They flare at each other intermittently, but by no means constantly.
I've started to treat the damaged fins with melafix, but I don't know how to treat the problem. What do you do about tail biting?
