Hello, I have been looking for new stuff to feed my bettas. I primarily feed them San Francisco Bay Brand Freeze dried bloodworms.
I am always hearing a lot of different advice on the matter of feeding my bettas primarily freeze dried bloodworms. I actually e-mailed the company and they replied saying that I could feed my bettas their product as a "staple" diet however they may get bored with just eating one thing and recommended brine shrimp. I have experimented with feeding Hikari freeze dried shrimp to some of my bettas but to no avail. Same with these Hikari pellets. It seems like once they got a taste of the bloodworms they didn't want to eat the pellets anymore.
Does anyone else just feed their fish bloodworms? I have heard this can be unhealthy but isn't this what they eat in the wild? I am thinking of going and picking up some live worms but I have heard this can be expensive and that worms can also carry disease...

Bettas naturally eat worms and insect larvae.
I'd mix the bloodworms and a high quality pelleted food, and then maybe consider throwing another type into the mix.
You want to feed your fish at least two different types of food, and it would help if one of those types was not a dry food i.e. frozen, gel packed, or live. Brine shrimp, daphnia, and flightless fruit flies are generally the safest types of live foods for your betta. You can also obtain these in frozen form.
Bloodworms, and particularly tubifex worms and black worms can carry parasites and bacteria if the cultures are not handled properly.

well I just tried feeding them some of my freeze dried Hikari Brine shrimp that I've had for awhile. I think they are pretty upset with me. I think that only 1 out of 10 actually liked it. I will go tomorrow for some live worms. I remember one time I feed one of my bettas a bug and he almost ripped my fingers off trying to grab it from me.

A funny thing happened today. I fed my one betta (a red crowntail named Wilbur 2) the betta pellets since he is the only one who eats them. Wilbur 2 then proceeded to look on in disgust (and doing the feed me wiggle) as I gave all of the other bettas the usual freeze dried bloodworms. Then when I came back to look at him a few hours later, he started flaring at me! I think he is pretty upset me with me now....
