I've had my betta for about 3 weeks now. I had never really seem him flaring--until yesterday, when he started flaring majorly! It was actually quite alarming and totally freaked me out. He kept doing it last night and did it again this morning. There is no one else in his 1 gallon tank and I'm not sure if the flaring is a good sign or a bad sign. Any feedback would be great, thanks!

It sounds like he is seeing his reflection in his tank. If you keep the light on that will cause a reflection or if his tank is near a well lighted area that will cause that to happen as well. Flaring is actually good exercise for your betta, however it is only good for him to be doing that for no longer than 5 minutes at a time and no more than twice a day because it could cause fin damage if done for long periods of time. Just try to keep him in a low light area and that should help.

Great, thanks. The only other concern I have is that he didn't do this at all for the first few weeks and now he is doing it suddenly. Could that be a sign of trouble or is it that he's more settled in his new home?

It sounds like he is just getting comfy with his home. Usually fish who are ill have little or no appetite, are showing an outward appearance of illness, and/or not their active self.

It seems that he was seeing his reflection everywhere and it was really freaking him out. What is odd is that when I first got him I put a mirror up to the tank to see if he would respond and he didn't. But now he sees a glimpse of himself in the thermometer and he goes nuts. I turned the light off before I left for work today, which should help cut down on reflections.
