my first spawn and of course I can't get ahold of the local breeder... Well it seems they have sortof got the hang of the whole thing except neither of them are putting the eggs in the bubble nest...they are racing each other to see how fast they can eat them... is that normal? I know the females usually will, but is it a fluke that I got a male with a taste for the eggs? should I seperate them now? let them finish and consider it a loss or what? they both ate earlier today so they shouldn't be hungry... please help.

Angel ========================================Uggh! eggeaters.... Most females will eat eggs, this is why the female is briefly stunned after releasing the eggs. This allows the male a head start to put them in the nest. Is your male young or a first-time breeder? Sometimes a young male will eat eggs on the first spawn. He might not the next time. Some breeders feel that feeding the male brine shrimp correlates with egg-eating. I don't feed my breeder males brine shrimp. If they are still spawning, let them finish. When it's all over, remove the female. Is there a chance a few eggs might have been placed in the nest? It's very difficult to see them but they look opaque compared to the other bubbles. If you are POSITIVE that no eggs are in the nest, remove the male. Don't leave him in the spawning tank if there are no eggs. Recondition the pair in their original tanks/containers (2-4 weeks depending on variables) Good Luck! ======================================== on edit. I just noticed this... >>>they both ate earlier today so they shouldn't be hungry...<<< Most breeders don't feed the male once the female is in the tank. I use a lantern to hold the female. I feed the female right before release. The male really shouldn't be concerned about food at this time. I give my males a white worm or two. They seem to eat it to remove it from their tank. In general experienced breeders will say "never feed the male". Once there are eggs in the nest, the male is not fed. If you do at this point, he may remember how hungry he is and eat the eggs. hope this helps.

there is a grand total of 3 eggs in the nest right now and about 8 still sitting on the bottm. I think the 3 in the nest the female actually put there. the male is a first time breeder...and the female has been bred once before I bought her. The breeder I got her from figured I could get two more spawns out of her. I am just worried though because this is my first time, I will be happy even if I only get 1 or 2 babies.... more reading for me I guess... Any help at all is well apreciated... thanks Angel

You can give them a chance but if the male turns on her or all spawning activity is over remove her. regarding the eggs on the bottom, is there a chance he'll put them up? I'm surprised she didn't eat them as well. She must be full. Next time that male will do a better job! It happens with first-time males. You did good!
