My little guy seems to have some vision problems; I think he may even be blind on his left side -- he doesn't react to any stimulus from that side, ignores pellets, mirrors, etc. He has a heck of a time eating, as well -- he has to strike a few times before he can "corner" the pellet.
Advice? I've taken the gel gravel out so that he can more easily get to the pellets once they fall to the bottom.
He's a very sweet fish - very attentive and playful when he sees me near the tank and he will come up to visit when I put my hand in the tank, etc. - so I don't want to simply write him off. If anyone has suggestion for helping this little guy - ways that I can make his life easier, ways to make it easier for him to eat, I'm all ears.
He's HUNGRY; that much I know -- he just has to work harder than my others to get the food in his mouth. I've tried crushing his pellets; I've tried giving him flake food; I've tried dried bloodworms...not much seems to help.
Are there any sort of supplements that I could put in his water to just get a little more nutrition in him?
His eyes LOOK fine -- not cloudy, no obvious scarring, etc. He's never had any major infections or problems, but of late (last couple of weeks I've noticed this. His energy is good -- not as high as my other betta's, but it's not like he spends the day camped out in a corner -- he explores and swims around and flares at the lamp every now and then. So I think that he FEELS all right.
Help? I'm of the mindset that no living creature is "disposable" when it develops a problem, and an animal in need of some extra TLC deserves it - that's why we're a rescue home for abused, neglected, and abandoned (and those with medical concerns) borzoi, so I'm a bit more inclined to go out of my way to accomodate an animal's needs. I just need some advice!
Thanks!
