I've had my male betta for just about two years now and he has never built a bubble nest (to my knowledge). He blows a few bubbles once in a while, but nothing like one of my other males used to make. Is this a normal thing? Is something wrong with him? Maybe he is just lazy? Also he usually keeps his fins all tight together like that, is that a bad sign? I've just been reading that life expectancy for bettas is only about 2 years, is that true? Perhaps he is just getting old... I was under the impression that bettas live a LONG time. In one betta book I own it says that the longest-living betta (that was documented) survived in a wine glass for 18 years! That seems crazy to me (probably not true either). I thought they would live 5 or 6 years at least.

When i first startedl ooking up bettas i thought they lived 3-6 years. Buuuut pet store bettas wont last that long. I know some people have had them for 2.5 years or so and are not doing to bad.
Some fish just don't blow bubble nests i guess. Though ive never heard of one not blowing one at all. it took about a month for my first fish to blow one, now he does every few days. My other 2 younger ones, 1 blows them all the time as soon as i got him, but kind of irregularaly, andddd my other new one hasnt really blown one, he's more concerned about swimming around or playing in a jungle gym of moss
So i guess its normal, each fish is different

well some just don't want to blow bubble nests. like my betta he has only blown 2 one when we first got him and one acouple of weeks ago. (we've had him for about 10 months) and I've had friends that have betta's that have betta's up to 5 years. so I don't think theres anything to worry about

Bettas just have such different personalities. The first betta I had only blew one bubble nest the whole time I had him. He was the only one I had and I didn't know any different. Now I have 3 males and 2 of them are constantly making the nests. My red one, Murray, makes a nest occassionally, but usually just has a line of bubbles around the edge of his tank. They all seem to be very healthy so I would think that your betta is okay as far as the nest goes. Ella
