Hello everyone I think I am the only person here at HB who lives in Japan so I shall tell you how bettas here work. ;D starlight you might wanna look at this, since you first asked me to do this...
Well where do I start? The best or the worst? I say the best. The best betta shop is near Atsugi Naval Base Japan (not yokosuka) My family and I go there (we gotta pay $22 for the toll to Atsugi, to and fro.) and there are like TONS (I mean it) of fishes. Cichlids, arowanas, orandas (big head goldfish), angelfish, neons, catfish, guppies and BETTAS!!! There are way more fishes there than what I named, probably 50 other types of fish Anyways the bettas are so cool! They go them veil tails, crown tail, db tails, triple tails, and other tail shapes I don't know what to call ;D They have them color white to melano black, but the coolest color is silver! It makes the bettas look like pure metal and their scales actually shine! Unfortunately they cost 9,085 yen for a boy (90 dollars) and 4,050 yen for a girl (40 bucks) The black bettas also cost the same price, but a little bit more expensive. The fish store also sells plakats, but very few selections.... They also kinda look like the girls! (they put them in the same row, I don't know why) The bettas are displayed in shelves and the bettas are put in plastics with air. This store is unique; they have crowntails and girls in one bag, but bagged separately(duh) for only 12 dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a bargain! They also have veil tail pairs for 6 bucks. They have, as I said, white, red, blue, aqua blue, green blue, green, red blue, red green, black, silver, purple, white mix with other colors, and finally, orange. If you want to see it you can get over here and if you find me I'll tell where it is, and maybe even get you a hotel.... (kidding about hotel part) ;D
But the BAD stuff- Home's Shop, near YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE (my base ) they bag the bettas and throw them carelessly on the side. The bettas have their own shelf, but they have bad selections (few colors) and most are dead. Luckily, I don't buy from that store any more.
Well betta care here is cool. Some betta vendors have cool jars all shapes and sizes just for bettas! Though I didn't buy one, I used a fancy candleholder for one of my red bettas, Pippin. He is being conditioned along with Shelob, Jaxx and Margarita, all of my bettas. They are all young, Pippin is a veil tail, Jaxx is a plakat and Shelob and Margarita are regular girls. Pippin is pure red and is about to grow some white at the end of his tail, Jaxx is blue-red with a greyish black color, Shelob is pure red and Margarita is a darkish red blue girl. The japanese highly value fish more than any pet: dogs 25% Fish 40% Cats15% Rodents 10% Bugs 5% Birds 5%. The most popular fish are orandas, arowanas, bettas and guppies. (I own bettas and guppies )
The Japanese are great breeders of bettas, even if I have never seen or known one. From the breeds of bettas in the shops here in Japan one can conclude that Japan treasures bettas. Who would have ever discovered metal bettas? (silver ones ;)_
And that's my report. Whatta ya think?
