I have a red betta in a cat shaped fish bowl and his body is red but only about 5% or less of his fins are red. The rest of the fins are clear. So I was wondering how long will it take for his color to come in? Any suggestion would be appreicated.
p.s. I have had him for about 3 months and he looks about a year old. And he is a veil tail betta.

A red betta would be red including the fins. The color doesn't grow in on the fins. Clear fins? Might be a butterfly.

I don't think so because I noticed a few minutes ago alittle blue is starting to come in on his fins. So how much longer do you think it will take for the color to fill in>

Starlight could you post a picture of a butterfly betta so I can compare it to mine and see if it is a butterfly betta?

Look at my sig picture of Starfire. He's a pinky-red bf with white fins. Bf's can have either clear or white fins. Veils often have red or blue color appearing randomly in the fins. This is called wash. A betta with more than two colors is considered a multi-color. Can you post a pic?

No and my betta looks nothing like that. He looks like all the other petstore bettas. And like I said I noticed alittle blue is coming in on the clear part of his fins.

Why? Because you haven't posted his picture and I'm trying to help you understand your betta's color.
First you said "about 5% or less of his fins are red."
I asked what % are clear?
You said "Possibley 5%. Why?"

Durbkat, while bettas do change color as they age, there isn't such a thing as the fish's "color coming in" at this point in its life. A fish's color comes in within the first two or three weeks of its life. Interestingly enough, the fry of just about every bony fish on earth looks the same when they're hatched.
Bettas with genes for certain color patterns can experience a color drift over time, but it's not as if your fish was born transparent, and only now is developing its full color -- that's not how things work. Your fish probably is experiencing a color drift as it ages, but its fins will never be fully colored.

Sorry starlight I thought you said what percent is red so about 85% is clear. And I don't have a digital camera to post it on the internet. Sorry.

Amanichen thanks for the advice So you don't think since blue is starting to come it won't fill in the rest clear part of the fin will fill in?

Amanichen thanks for the advice So you don't think since blue is starting to come it won't fill in the rest clear part of the fin will fill in? Some blue might show up, but the entire fin won't be red and blue, it'll stay transparent for the most part.
