I don't know about anybody else here, but my friends think that I am weird because I treat my betta like a pet and not like a decoration. When visitors in my home walk by Little Charlie's tank I tell them that they need to look at him and say hello to him because Little Charlie is always looking at them, and I feel that he deserves to be acknowledged since he likes the attention so much. If I had a dog or a cat that was looking at them they would acknowledge it. I need to know if anybody else has the same problem that I have.

Yeah people always think that I'm weird... I live at college and when the power went out, i was worried about ralph because the heater would shut off too.... I really think fish are pets and not decorations... Especially bettas, they have the best personality

Yeah they do. My roommate thinks it is funny that I get things like plants for my fish and that I take pictures to put on the web. I have to take quite a few to get one that is decent and she says that it's wierd that I have more pics of my fish then my friends (it probably is )

I talk to my Betta's and call them by thier names. So if that makes me wierd. Then I'm wierd. That would mean I am weird too I talk to my bettas all the time. I am a SAHM with all my kids in school full time, so during the day they are my only company. I talk to them and play with them and it drives people nuts if I am out and say I have to get home cause my fish have to have their dinner on time. I get the 'they are just fish' all the time, but I always say that if they just spend some time with them they would understand. I have one friend that finally took me up on the offer to sit and watch a betta for a while and I let her feed my friendliest one and she now has 2 beatiful betta buddies of her own! So this 'weirdness' is contagouis too ;D

I just got a betta and my roommate's been giving me funny looks because I'll look up just as Monte (my betta) does something kooky (like flare at a blue water bottle) and burst into laughter. Or I keep saying, "Kelli look, look!" i'm sure she's going to be convinced that I'm crazy w/ in a week.

People only think you're weird when you assume that they share your interest and enthusiasm in something. This has nothing to do with fish, and everything to do with the way you act towards other people.
I give my fish very good care, and I spend lots of time watching them, but my roomate doesn't think I'm weird because I don't act that way. If you act obsessive over something, people will think you're weird no matter what it is.

I guess that makes me weird too...and I like it. I figure if I bring them home then they are part of the family, to be talked to and played with.

My husband doesn't really think I am 'weird' necissarily. He doesn't get my desire to buy more and more Bettas though, LOL. He says we are running out of pratical places to put them and I think that he is afraid they will take over the entire house. I really don't see the problem with that though LOL.

when people ask me what kind of pets i have, i say i have "angry fish". That gets me some funny looks, especially if i do the "angry fish noise" (growling and putting my hands under my chin like hackles). But its funny!!! ;D

I don't think people think I'm weird. I think with my friends and family, they just accept the fact that Aquila is a pet to me and not a decoration making him very special to me. Personally, I don't really care if they look at fish as more of a decoration than a pet (as long as they are taking care of them properly if they have a fish or more). I mean, I look at spiders as pests and yet people have them as pets (and I'm sure find interesting personalities with their pet spiders {shudders}). I think it's just like amanichen said, it's not so much treating the fish as a pet but how you act towards people who don't share the same views that make people label you weird or not.

my friends thought I was a bit touched for the attention i paid to my fish (I keep more than just bettas) -- until I slowly brought them all over to the wet side! Convinced one to get an old 30 gallon running with some cichlids (she is now far more obsessed than I am!) and another who thought I was way out to lunch is now a very devoted fish mom after I gave her son a betta and bowl as a birthday gift (she has since shared her passion for bettas with her family, giving her nephew a betta and bowl as a Christmas gift). I tell you, people only think you are weird until they get interested in the same thing as you (in our case -- Fishies!)
