I'll soon have another edition to my betta family. Last night while at the new pet store, I noticed a tank full of female bettas. This morning, one of my friends told me that she got our LPS to order in 10 females and that they'll be in on Friday. She asked if I wanted one held, so I said sure.
Do females have varied personalities as the males? If she is non-agressive, could I put two in my 5 gallon hex and add an algae eater of somesort (apple snail maybe?) and not be overstocked? If it does not work out, I would have a backup.
I'm excited though!

yes, females can have varied personalities, just like males.
3 females would be better than 2...and you can get away with 3 in a 5g, as long as you keep up on your water changes.

oh I'm jealous. I can't find many here. I'll have to harass some of my stores for some when I'm ready.

I lucked out last week. Our walmart got females in. I bought all 4..I love them and they have great personalities like the males. I have all four in a 10 gallon tank with lots of plants and hiding spaces out of pvc pipe.. I really love the females..

Female bettas are the coolest and I think the least understood. They come in many colors and all have very different personalities. Some are very gentle while others are more aggressive. I tend to believe the younger ones are more aggressive as they develope a pecking order. I have a 55 gallon aquarium with 11 females, 7 guppies(the bettas love to eat guppie fry!), 3 platys (also live bearers) a plecostamus, and 3 cory cats. When I add new fish I have noticed that there are spats until everything gets settled and I use Stress Coat frequently as fins get nipped. This seems to help and I have not had any problems with finrot, etc. I have read several books that say it is to hard to keep a tank of female bettas. I totally disagree. I think if you keep water conditions good and plenty of space they are fairly easy to keep and you can also keep more of them and they come with colors that match that of the males. I am currently keeping a diary of my babies and though my only training is with actual fish keeping I feel there is a lot to learn about these very intelligent fish. P.S. I also have 2 males! My daughter has a male and a 5 gallon hexagon tank with 4 females.

Flurry keep us updated on what you are going to do. I also recently bought a female and I forgot how much fun and how gorgeous they are. I have not had one since I lost my one and only female fifteen years ago and I am glad that I did get another one and I am sure that you will feel the same way.
