I finally got my two Bettas out of their old, small tank and into a nice 2.5 gallon separated one with some plants. My little cowardly Pearl is enjoying the plants to hide in while Blue is enjoying attacking everything new. :-D
On another note, the store I bought the tank from, which claims to be a specialty fish store, was horrendous. All of their Bettas looked sick, and I let the cashier know that a few of them had very progressive fin rot...which he didn't believe. >.< He said his fins were just "short"
I think I'm going to apply to work there simply so I can keep on eye on their Bettas. (Which seemed to be the only fish in the store they didn't care about.)

I'm amazed at the amount of ignorance regarding Bettas. People seem to think that the labyrinth organ means they don't need any space to swim, let alone good water quality etc. Funny that other labyrinth fishes aren't subject to the same poor treatment. I've been keeping fish my entire life and it's still hard to see how far gone some of those store Bettas are. Just to warn you though, taking them on as a charity project might be disappointing- many won't recover much or you'll see really ignorant customers buy them. I usually just wind up boycotting those stores. But go for it if you have a mind to, you might have some luck.

There's a pretty knowledgeable fish store here and when I was in their last, the one guy said he hadn't looked at the bettas in a few weeks, when I pointed out the dead ones I saw. Just one of those things.
Might be better worth trying to educate folk (staff and customers) if you see them looking at the bettas.

So they were pretty knowledgeable... and completely negligent.
