I recently bought a female betta from wal-mart and she was pretty drab looking white body with pinkish fins with a little blue in them. Well i brought her home and have had her in my ten gallon tank where she is pretty much the only fish, other than the two gold fish that i used for cycling and a baby Bichir which is still very small and will soon go to a 75 gallon tank. I have had her for about three weeks and her fins have turned almost a red with darker blue streaks. But what iam worried about is her head is getting new color two it is starting to get red on it and it looks the same pattern on both sides. Iam worried if this is a disease or just her getting more color now that she is in a better living condition. The tank is kept at 78 Degrees F and i feed her Hikari gold betta food and flake food and freeze dried tubifex worms with the occasional algea pellet. Should i be worried or is she just getting better coloring thats now coming out.

sounds normal to me. I've heard lots of stories about the color improving once bettas get in clean water.

Maybe I misunderstood you, but it sounds like you said that you have your betta in the same tank as goldfish? If that is the case, then I would remove the goldfish from that tank. Goldfish do not thrive in water that is 78 degrees. They need cooler temps. than tropical fish, and they also put out more ammonia then a tropical fish so that is not good for the betta either.

ps141, your betta is probably young and just developing her color pattern. It also probably helps she has clean water and a good owner ;D

Yeah, that sounds pretty normal. When I first got my female all of my friends thought she was really ugly. Now they see her and say "She's so pretty!" Also, I just read about marble-colored bettas on the betta splendens wedsite. They change quite a bit when their colors begin to shift. Your betta could be a marble, but I really don't know... She sounds pretty though!
