Hello, I bought 2 male bettas last week. I currentlly have a 2 gallon tank that is divided by a glass divider. I quickly found out that this isn't going to work so I purchased another 2 gallon tank and plan to seperate them tomorrow. They are trying to fight each other through the glass, and I'm afraid this will be too stressfull on them long term. I purchased them from Petco and was very disappointed with how little they told me about caring for these fish. Had I not read a few things online I really would not know what to do. Another problem is the water temp is only 64-67 degrees, and I learned by reading here that is too cold. The pet store worker told me that room temperature was fine. I purchased 2 25W heaters and plan to use them once I get the new tank set up. What is the best way to heat up the water? I'm sure it's not good to go from 64 degrees to 75 degrees in a short amount of time. How many days should I slowly raise the temps of the tanks? Last but not least I also purchased two small filters. After doing a thourough bowl cleaning I realized that really isn't something I want to do every week, but somewhere I read that bettas don't like the current caused by filters. Is this true? I was really hoping to filter the tanks. If it is ok to use the filter how often would you recommend that I clean the tanks? Ugh I hope that's all. I may think of something else later. I really love these fish already and want to do everything I can to take good care of them. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi totmommy, welcome to HB and to the world of betta addiction , Your questions are good ones, but are mostly answered in other threads around the forum here. So I'll answer briefly and encourage you to continue poking around here - if you can't find what you need post again. It's best to alter the tank temp 2 degrees per day, so to go from 64 to 78 (ideal for bettas) will take you about a week. It's not always easy to regulate those 25 watt heaters that precisely, however, so just do your best and don't panic if it jumps 5 degrees. Your instinct is correct, make the change gradual. About pet store clerks: Most don't know anything about bettas. It's not a slam, it's just a fact. When I found HB, I discovered a place where fallacies are discussed and experience is shared, and that has helped me weed the fact from fiction and understand why bettas need what they do. Again, read as much as you can here on the forum and HB website About filters: In a 2-gallon tank, it's a personal choice. Some bettas don't like current, others don't care, some owners hate doing full water changes, others prefer it. If you want to try the filters, do so...the main issue I've heard of (I don't use filters) is that the current can cause problems with the long fins, so you may need to slow it down. Again (broken record here) READ THE FORUM THREADS - many others have been where you are. Best of luck and keep us posted on your progress. ~abm
