Hello: I am very new to keeping fish, etc, and have had a beautiful betta for one week. He is doing great, so far, and I decided to add a few playties for company. I was worried my betta would be the problem one, but two of the playties (especially the speckled one) have been nipping at the betta. The betta has been somewhat tolerant, but is getting pissed off and chases them away. I removed the two nipping playties, and was wondering. Does anyone have some advise on good tankmates for the betta? He is in a 12 gallon, heated, filtered aquarium with some hiding places and silk plants. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks.

I like the white clouds and oto cats that I got for my betta but i'm not so sure he liked them. When I researched it those were some fish that were suggested to keep with bettas. One thing that didn't seem right to me though is the betta likes warm water and the white clouds like cooler water. They seem to tolerate the warmer water ok though.
One thing I learned the hard way about having a community tank with my betta is an overloaded tank is not a happy tank. You have 12 gallon so a community might work better for you than it did in my 5 gallon. My betta is back to living solo and will be in a 2.5 gallon tank as soon as the water chemistry is right.

My betta and molly (basically a bigger platy) did not get along at all. They're nippers, and I think probably too showy. If your store will take them back, I'd suggest trading them for a small school of corydoras or otos. Not nippy, very mild mannered. Just make sure to provide plant and hidey holes for them to hide in.

I got three little corys yesterday to share a 10 gallon tank with my betta. So far they're getting along splendidly. I feed my betta Hikari pellets, dried bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp. My corys get sinking wafers. The wafers are disappearing from the tank much sooner than I thought they would (these corys are seriously tiny), and I see my betta hovering around the bottom of the tank more than he used to, so I have to wonder if he's eating the wafers too!

Alright, I'm going to have to take that back. I noticed yesterday that one of the corys is missing an eye, and his tail is all frayed. Unless the other corys attacked him, I'm guessing that the betta is the culprit. I'm very surprised. This cory was sort of the outcast of the three, so I wonder if something was wrong with him from the start. I have no idea what caused this to happen.
