There will always be a few bettas who leave behind unforgettable memories. Smaug was my first feisty boy. While his tankmate was young, scrawny, and timid because of his previous conditions, Smaug showed me the ferocity of the "beautiful warrior". I called him my dragon, and bragged about his "don't mess with me" attitude. His presence seemed to bring confidence to the timid little male who lived next to him. Watching Smaug, he grew in attitude himself.
Smaug was already middle-aged when I got him over a year ago. He held on for a long time. I watched him slow down, lose weight and some finnage, and eventually spend his days hanging around the top of the tank, dozing like any old man. I'd help him eat, although as time went by it took several tries for him to catch the food pellets. But he never stopped greeting me, never failed to come over and say hi if I entered the room.
Though our betta family has grown considerably since Smaug was brought home, his death still leaves a very noticable empty spot. So long, dragon. We'll miss you.

Oh, MrsSmitty, I'm so sorry about Smaug! No doubt, to him, you are also unforgettable - (that dragon's princess, for sure.) R.I.P., Smaug.

Thank you both. It's funny--doesn't matter how many bettas I have, or how busy I am, or how many times I give myself the "you were a good fishmom, he had a long life" speech. Losing one just always wrecks my day.
Now if my mean cannibalistic frog dies, I might not cry so much!
By the way, lol about being his princess! I like that.

Not that this is the proper board for puns, but - So what you're saying, Princess, is you definitely won't be kissin' on that cannabalistic froggie anytime soon...(?)
