Tomorrow morning will be one week since my adorable Finny has been with me. He is a regular old long finned blue Betta. I have never had a Betta before, although I have always wanted one so. He is so dear and sweet, and I love him so. I can understand how much you guys all love yours! This is such fun.
I used to think that Bettas built bubble nests only if they had a wife and babies on the way, but my little bachelor has quite a row of bubbles started! Isn't that cute! My question is, how do they build a bubble nest? Do they just go to the surface and blow little bubbles or what? He is in the quarantine tank in my bedroom, so I haven't been able to actually watch his bubble nest building; although I absolutely canNOT wait to catch him in the act! I will probably keep him in quarantine for about 4 weeks and then he will go into a peaceful community tank. (BTW, I would LOVE to hear some success stories about good tankmates for a male Betta, hint, hint) I can't wait for that time. It will be such fun to have him in the living room with me!
Well I am rambling now, so I better go. Thank you, Barbels Oh and thank you for the hospitality, guys. This is really a nice place.

Hi Barbels,
Your Finny sounds just beautiful and he must be a healthy, happy guy since he's already making bubbles. They don't have to have a female around to build a bubble nest. It's their instinct to build it -- just in case a cute girl comes swimming by! I have seen my bettas in the act of building their nests and it is just about the cutest thing. They swim out to the middle, take a gulp of air from the surface, swim over to the edge and spit out two or three bubbles at a time. The bubbles go right up to the edge of the water and stick together. Most of the bubble nest building seems to take place at night, so sometimes it's hard to catch them in the act. My bettas are all in separate gallon homes, and I don't know much about tank mates. I hope Finney will be very happy in his new home!

Hi, Barbels
Some of my guys constantly blow nests and others only now & then. I sometimes place one of the girls next to a guy to change the pace a bit & a nest shows up a day or so later. (They're such show-offs! : )

I believe that there is some kind of substance in their mouths that coats the bubbles and helps them to stick together.
Watch him very closely once you put him in the community tank. At the first sign of trouble, take him out. What fish do you have in there now? I would not put him with Barbs, Mollys or any hyper fish. I had Tiger Barbs immediately attack a poor betta and try to rip off his fins! I've kept bettas with Dwarf Gouramis, Corys, Plecos, Platys, Tetras and Guppies without any problems, but others may have more to say on that lol.
Congrats on your week with Finny! Hopefully there will be many many more weeks, months, and years to come!

Thank you so much for your kind words; almost made Finny cry, he's sensitive. Actually, the community tank is not yet. I hope to put everything together within the month. This will be a 75 gallon planted tank. I will be doing a fishless cycle. Finny's tankmates will be bunches of Cories( I love Cories, they are so sweet and clowney;hence the handle, "Barbels"), Pencilfish, 1 Bristlenose and a huge school of Neons. >:(And NO aggressive fish allowed!
