Since it's been a while since I've posted here, this is for my fishy and furred friends who've gone on since:
First, Toby, my terrier mix from the pound, died unexpectedly in August while I was away at work. He was in his kennel while my parents when to the store and when they came home they found him curled up, dead in his sleep. While we have a new dog, I still miss him horribly.
Second, my bettas: I lost Paprika, my first adopted betta, to a long internal infection. It hurt more than any of the other fish, because I thought we'd licked it and he abruptly started going downhill after about a month of good health. Paprika was a red veil-tail adopted from HB, who had lived with me for about ten months.
Gemini, my second female (and the last from that store--neither female from them has lived very long, Gypsy less than 48 hours, Gemini about six weeks) developed dropsy, and failed to respond to treatment. She was pink with purple fins.
Navarre, my Cambodian crown-tail, died unexpectedly after a few days of uncharacteristically listless behavior that did not respond to general treatments. I can only assume he had internal parasites or he was simply old.
Ernie, my second betta ever, died of similar causes. He was a pale blue delta-tail with one funny caudal fin. I'd had them for almost a year when they died. As they came from the same store and possibly the same shipment, I suppose it just may be they were old and their time had come.
Ernie, Paprika, and Gemini are buried in the little "fish cemetery" in the woods near the house. Navarre, unfortunately, died while the ground was still frozen last spring. He was buried in the composter and presumably helped to fertilize the garden this summer.
