I had to have Ditto put to sleep today She was 19 years old (older than my kids) and had cancer. The vet allowed me to stay with her throughout the event; it was clear that this was not the norm but I appreciated his efforts to make me feel as comfortable as possible. Although I know this was the right thing to do (she had a tumor in her throat, was beginning to have trouble breathing and could not eat solid food anymore) it is still very emotional and very hard for me to think about. Ditto was one of 4 "kittens" that our cat Oddball had in 1986. She was the last of the dynasty; Oddball died in 1998, her son Paws in 1991, Stretch in 1999, Greyling in 2002 and now Ditto. I know this is a fish forum - but I am crying and I know others here will understand and my husband doesn't. On the plus side, all 8 of my betta guys are happy, healthy and thriving Thanks for reading and for your prayers.

Sorry to hear about Ditto, losing a pet is tough after a bit they become just a part of the family. If you need anything let me know.

I am really sorry for your loss ABM. Ditto sounds like an amazing cat and I'm sure that's why she chose to stay with you for so long. I am thinking of you and your family and wishing you the best. Take care.

Thanks to both of you:) Longevity ran in that cat family - her mom lived to be 15, her brother to 16 and her sister to 17. I am fine. The hardest part for me is before "the deed is done," sort of waiting for the ax to fall. Afterwards there is a peace about having done the right thing and not hearing her poor ragged breathing anymore. And we have wonderful friends who picked up my son and kept him overnight so he did not have to go to the vet with me. He knows, of course, we're not hiding what happened, but he was with me when Greyling had to be put to sleep and although he did fine, it is not something I recommend for kids to go through.
Thanks for the kind words and thoughts.

I am very sorry ABM. It is hard to lose a pet that has been with you through many years and many events. I am glad that you were able to stay with Ditto at the end. I have been there and I really think it makes a difference for you and especially your pet. My thoughts are with you and I am here if you need me.
