hi is it normal for bettas to flare at people, cause i know they do it to other bettas, but when they do that to other bettas they are being aggressive so is he trying to be aggressive towards me or just showing off?

My bettas haven't really flared at me under normal circumstances, but something funny happened today concerning that. I was wearing a bright blue Hello Kitty hat, and when I peeked into one of my bettas' bowl, he came over and flared at me. I guess he was confused by this bright blue, unfamiliar thing on my head.

Mine in the 2 1/2 gal flares if his light is on, and the room light is dim. When I come over, apparently I make him see his reflection.

Sometimes if someone approaches their tank suddenly and startles them, it will cause them to flare. At the same time though, one of my guys in particular likes to play "chase the pen" and will flare during that although he seems to know it's just a game. I think it can be a sign of both aggression and showing off when they do it depending on the circumstance. My guys also do it sometimes when they know they're about to be fed. They incorporate it into the "feed me wiggle" that they do.

flaring actually can express something other than territorial aggression, it can also be an expression of love, i believe that it is also done playfully
so if he's flaring at you, chances are he's saying 'i love you mommy' or hes playin with you
