Hello all, just figured I'd tell the story of my dear betta who swam to that big stream in the sky in October.
First of all, what is the normal life expectancy of a betta? Because I think mine might have been a record setter. My father-in-law offered me one of his two bettas in early 2000. I chose the more colourful of the two. Then a couple of weeks later he gave me the other one too. The colourful one died after about a year, so I cleaned out the bowl and bought a new betta, a beautiful bright yellow one. Unfortunately he developed a green fungus around his fins and died after five days. Broke my heart, and I thought about buying another but I didn't want the same thing to happen again, so I just stuck with the one. Over the years his fins eroded and grew back several times. All this time I never got around to naming him. I got paranoid that if I finally named him, he'd probably die the next day. So he was just known as "the fish".
Well, last October his tail completely rotted away. I was telling my mom about it and how I was afraid to name him, and she joked that when he did finally die, I could just say "goodbye, Fred" as he spins down the toilet bowl. Then the next day, you guessed it, he died! That's right, I had "the fish" for almost six years!
So, this is in memory of my very old, not so colourful, nameless betta.

Sorry for you loss I know it sucks... but 6 years!!! That has to be a record for a betta! The normal life for one is only two.

6 Years! It must be hard to say good bye but at least you had 6 years with him.
