Does anyone else out there have a healthy fish who digs? My Jade has glass marbles in the bottom of his bowl, and he's very fond of rooting around in them. His breathing's normal, color gorgeous, appetite fine, and very active (but not spastic, if you know what I mean). I thought maybe it was parasites, and other symptoms might show up to confirm, but it's been 5 days now since I first noticed it and he's still doing just fine. He's one of my more messed-up rescues from...er...Floor-Mart, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was fairly neurotic! I would have posted sooner, but I'VE been sick. And now the dog's coughing....sheesh. Ever have one of those months?

One of my friends had those glass marbles in her betta's bowl and ever once in a while you would hear a clank coming from the bowl across the room. It was the fish pushing around the marbles into the glass sides. As long as he appears healthy otherwise, maybe he's just looking for scraps of food. Just make sure he can't get stuck somehow if the marbles are too heavy though. I hope the family's feeling better soon!

My fish like to nose around in the marbles at the bottom of their tank too. They seem pretty happy & healthy - I think that it just means that we have curious fish who are exploring their environments.
Something else that I've always wondered if they ever get bored swimming around their tanks all day.

I put some of those smooth river rocks in my betta's tanks and one of my male bettas, Blue Boy, loves to shimmy across them sideways and I swear he has a look of ecstasy on his face. None of the others do that.

Well, thank you. That's comforting, as since I've written, others have started rooting around in THEIR marbles, too! But everyone is happy and healthy--bubblenests abound! So I guess I just have some bored fishies. Can't say as I blame 'em.
Sorry I haven't been posting--I'm not dead, just busy. And the family is (finally!) feeling better!

MrsSmitty, Just a guess, but it could be that they see their reflections in the marbles, which causes them to "nose around" a lot. I have only had marbles in w/females & they were totally glued (nose down) to the marbles for a while. (It's nice to know that you had some male bettas doing it, too. We'd hate for that "enjoying one's own reflection thing" to be gender specific, wouldn't we? )

Napoleon does this sometimes in his gravel. He doesn't actually dig, but he sticks his nose right down into it and looks just like a cory catfish. LOL
I don't know whether or not he ever finds anything worth eating, though.

I know that on Bloodworm Day there might be something tasty down there if the fish missed one--maybe they're just hopeful! You guys really put my mind at rest; a widespread parasite infection was NOT on my list of "Things MrsSmitty wants to deal with in September"!
