Well, I broke down today and got two new ones... I work at a petstore, and we receive a shipment of about 30 bettas every week. I have pretty well conditioned myself NOT to take them home all the time but I just couldn't resist these two. "Strawberry" caught my eye with his pretty pattern, and the big white spot on his head. At first I thought it was a patch of fungus, but it is actually just marbleing, I absolutely LOVE his coloring. "Blueberry" just seemed to compliment "Strawberry" so well, and I love his pattern as well (though you can't see it that good in the pic, he's much more camera shy than Strawberry is) They are sharing a 2.5 gallon divided tank together. "Strawberry" "Strawberry" again "Blueberry"

Wow, what beauties! I'm so jealous! In all the practically hundreds of lfs's I have nearby, I can never find any that really amaze me. Perhaps it's just hard to be amazed by a little sad betta shoved in a dixie cup. The one my daughter picked out is pretty, but he's nothing like those! So... In my newest addiction (bettas, that is..) I am preparing to bid on two beauties on aquabid. (They are from the same seller, so might as well rationalize the ridiculous shipping charge by getting two!) One is chocolate and one is yellow hm. I've already named the chocolate one Peanut...that's right, I'm already attached and I'm not even his owner yet!! So cross your fingers for me! The auction ends Sunday, and there haven't been any bids yet

Good Luck on the auction! Peanut is a cute name... I am seriously considering breeding Strawberry, though I don't really work with veil tails when it comes to breeding... but I am thinking of crossing him to a marble crown tail female. Since CT is pretty much just as dominant as veil tail, genetics wise, I should be able to get some CTs out of the spawn, and with his marble pattern, and the females marble pattern, there should definitly be some marble babies (hopefully some with his kind of coloring and pattern!) And even the ones that turn out to be veil tails should still be great looking bettas, and I'm sure I could easily find homes for them.

I'd be interested in taking one of those babies off your hands. I've actually talked myself out of the auction. I don't have the resources (time or money) for breeding, and I've decided to spend the $40 at a later date if I want to get into breeding. So...I will just happily devote my betta buying activity to those humble lfs mutts that need a good home. (If I keep looking, I might even find a beauty like Strawberry.) Peanut is already in good hands, so he really doesn't need my help. So, if you need to unload a veiltail (or two), I'm here!

Well, I have come across a very pretty blue/white marble DR CT female that I am getting in a few weeks, and planning on breeding to Strawberry in about a month. I'll let you know how it goes...

WHOA! They are gorgeous! Lucky you working at a Pet Store so you get early pick. Lucky fish that a compassionate person is there to look out for them and make sure they are treated kindly.

I do love working at the store, I'm pretty much in love with all animals, and I have learned a lot about different animals at the store, but sometimes its quite hard to see 30 new bettas come in every week. What makes it worse is that I actually order the fish each week, so I can CHOOSE which bettas to order, i.e. colors, tail types, (veils, CTs, and DTs), males, females, etc... It's very hard to resist them, but I've gotton better at it in the two years that I've been there. I'm the one that takes care of them, changes their water and feeds them. Before I was there, they didn't receive the care they needed, but most of them do pretty well now, even though they are in those small cups till someone buys them. I change the water in the cups everyday, and make sure they each get their pellets every day. I also try to get as many customers as I can educated in proper betta care, and often convince them to buy a one or two gallon tank for their new betta instead of a small bettahex or critter keeper. I rarely ever get one that gets sick, and if one does, I move it to a larger hospital type tank and treat him till he is better. The hardest part is probably when a customer buys a betta, and then comes back a few days or a week later and he is dead. I try to educate these people as much as I can, but some of them just don't want to listen, or don't care, and end up not changing the water, not getting a proper size bowl, etc.... and I don't work on weekends or at night, so they sometimes get information from less than knowledgeble people that work there, or no information at all, and the betta suffers because of it. I am happy that I can at least do the best that I can, but it is still hard sometimes.
