I have several bettas but I am very interested in getting a plakat. None of the lfs around here have them of course. Is there any difference in the care or behavior of a plakat as compared to a regular betta!

The care of a plakat is the same as with a splenden. You don't run into fin rot problems with them very often, since they are short finned. They're quite lively little guys, all the ones that I have ever had are constantly flaring at neighbors and making bubble nests.

Thanks for the info. Do you sell your plakats when they are old enough and if so, is shipping a fairly safe process?

I do sell them when they are old enough, but it will be at least four months till the spawn from these guys are ready to go to new homes. I have shipped out about forty or so shipments of bettas so far using both USPS Express Overnight Mail and USPS Priority (2-3 day delivery), and so far I have not lost a single betta during shipping. I'd say that it is very safe for them, just as long as the person receiving them acclimates them the right way to their new home.

Is there any difference in the care or behavior of a plakat as compared to a regular betta! plakats seems tougher & dun get stressed easily like other long fin breeds. larger type (giant) plakats r strong dudes & pretty spunky. they also eat more, but generally have a relatively shorter life-span than other bettas. as for caring for them... there r not much differences really. regular clean conditioned water replacement & feeding varieties of food is always recommended for all bettas.

While plakats don't necessarily require different care than captive bred bettas, you have to remember this: The closer a fish is to being wild, the closer to wild its water chemistry will have to be. Fish that have been captive bred for generations will be used to different water chemistry than fish which only recently were taken from the wild. It all depends on where your fish came from.
