I have been meaning to post a picture of our latest addition, Melvin. He is quite the feisty little guy and appears to be quite young still. We just love him!

Bethie, Melvin is beautiful! What unique coloring he has! I know you're enjoying him. How can you tell his age - just behaviors, or is there something in their coloring, or finnage, or something else? Just trying to learn - and thanks for posting his pic!

Welcome Melvin He is beautiful. Are his colors white body with purple fins? I have not seen one colored like him. Is the blue object his Hidey Hole?

Thanks for the compliments! His coloring is quite unique indeed! His body is actually a light pink with a shimmer to it, with purple and white fins. The blue object is his hidey hole! It's actually a little tv that is meant to be a hamster hidey. There is a large, smooth opening on one side and a transparent 'screen' on the front. Melvin just loves his! The colors of his are actually purple and green. AnotherBettaMom - Since I bought Melvin from the lps there is no sure fire way to tell his age. Here is my reasoning as to why I think he is younger than others I have gotten. We have had him for a few months now, and he has noticeably grown. He was actually quite tiny (all around, but mainly in length) at first compared to other bettas - both at the store and mine. (There were also a few other smaller guys brought in with the same shipment which leads me to believe they were all fairly young). His fins were also much shorter and his caudal fin has probably grown an extra 1/2 an inch since we've had him and he hadn't been suffering from fin rot or any damage. He is also just filled with energy and is always raring to go. It's almost as if his actions seem slightly childish compared to the other bettas I have had that always appear older when I purchase them. When we brought him home he went around and popped every single bubble that had formed in his tank because the plants and gravel were new. It was quite the sight to see! In addition, his colors have become much richer over the past couple of months and he has developed new coloring, but that can be the case with any betta because of the conditions they live in before you bring them home. For example, his body was white when we purchased him but has now changed into an amazing shimmery pink, with hints of darker purple in spots. I'm not sure if this helps at all? Mainly, I have just been going by size, as even though he has grown somewhat he is still small.

Thanks! I would guess his age to be quite young as well, just by his behavior and size as you have. I know that so many of you are so well-versed in all things betta, I just wondered if there was a way to tell for sure. It's kind of good to know that even you "experts" have to guess at some stuff!

Bethie -
I really like the TV hidey hole. Where did you get it? How is Melvin doing?

Melvin's just as feisty and fun as ever. He has built this huge bubblenest and comes charging, full flare, at anyone or anything that even comes close to his tank. I have a good number of pet stores around here so I can always find neat hamster supplies somewhere. You can find the hamster tv at Petsmart: www.petsmart.com/small%5Fanimal/shopping/the%5Fhamster%5F%5F%5Fgerbil%5Fshop/cage%5Fdecorations/products/product%5F27175.shtml Surprisingly, I only have a couple of bettas right now. I find during the semester with work and school I barely have time to do anything else, so the cleanings of 2 gal tanks per fish once/week for a couple of fish gets to be about as much as I can handle. Plus, our tiny little apartment can't really hold any more tanks at the moment. We'll see what happens when we move into a bigger place in a few months though. I'm sure Melvin would just love to meet Diabolitte! I bet they would make a cute pair.

AnotherBettaMom - I'm glad my explanation helped! I am by no means an expert. I think when it comes down to it we all have to judge betta issues upon our own experiences and opinions, guided by general guidelines. I originally came to this board (well, the old HB board) right after I had purchased my guy Rudy because he was having problems with heavy breathing. I got such great help that I was hooked and have been here ever since, adding a few more to the bunch since then .
