What does everyone think about "exercising" your fish? Is it better to let them flare when they want to, such as leaving a mirror nearby or having a buddy that they can see? or to give them set times for exercising, then remove whatever is making them flare?
Just curious

I have cardboard dividers between by betta tanks so I can control flare time. I have noticed that if one of them tires of the game they will just go and rest in one of their plastic plants so it probably is o.k. either way. With my being able to control it though it seems that they are really fired up during flare times and they really seem to enjoy it. If they saw each other all the time it probably wouldn't be as exciting for them. Don't you wish you could know what goes on in those betta brains?

All of my betta boys are in 2.5 gal tanks or bowls, situated in pairs throughout our house. I don't use paper in between them or regulate their flaring at all. They have plenty of "retreat" space, plants & a hiding/resting place. If I used paper in between them, I honestly think they would stare at that empty spot in wonder of the whereabouts of their "flare buddy!" I have, on occasion, placed a piece of paper in between a female & a male tank, if the female constantly shows fear stripes or appears stressed. (Betta girls also flare/interact and instinctively retreat & rest.)

At school, I have 2 bettas in a 5 gallon tank with a clear divider. They flare when they want to, and rest when they want too. The first day they flared for about an hour, but ever since they have been much more relaxed with each other. One is flaring right now while the other one is hanging by the divider.

The only thing I have done is isolate Scraggle Fin as he REALLY hates seeing any other Bettas. He will remain agitated with flaring and puffing up and he will not retreat. I have him on the bedroom dresser and he sees his reflection but doesn't flare - seems he can recognize himself! My other 4 guys are paired up with a neighbor and seem to have times for flaring at each other and times for ignoring each other.
