i went out to PA to pick up my betta smaragdina pair today, and i was overwhelmed by the number of betta species this guy had available! after over an hour of debating and deciding, i decided to forgo the smaragdina. instead, i got 2 pairs of betta coccina, 1 pair of betta pugnax, 1 male dr ct betta splendens, 1 female ct betta splendens, and 1 regular female betta splendens, plus some anubias and java fern. eeeeppp!! the coccina just caught my eye. theyre absolutely darling and he said they get along better than the smaragdina. the pugnax are HUUUUGE. bigger than my giant plakats, and i've always wanted a mouthbrooding species. i just couldnt talk myself out of the lovely steel dr ct, but that's already not bad. i did manage to talk myself out of a yellow-orange veil and an orange and black veil anyway, lots of photos to come!

Those betta splendens are absolutely gorgeous! I have never heard of a coccina or a pugnax before. It looks like you are keeping the male and female pugnax together. You can do that with those fish? Give some info on these types of fish if you could please because I am interested in finding more about them.

you can keep males and females together with several of the wild betta species. coccina are bubblenesters like betta splendens, but pugnax are mouthbrooders - the father holds the young in his mouth. i'll link to some articles when i dig them off my other laptop. meanwhile, the coccina are more this color now: they don't call them "the wine red betta" for nothing! i wish you could see how their eyes glint like emeralds

That is very interesting. The coccina change color? I have never seen wild bettas before now. Any info you can give me on wild bettas would be appreciated. Thanks

you know how betta splendens (especially females) get pale when they are stressed? the first photos i took of them were right when they got home, so they were kind of stressed out. the wine-red color is their usual shade. here's a link to the IBC species maintenance program, where you can look at all the different betta species out there ibc-smp.org/

bonnie and clyde are SO cute. clyde is a little more shy, but he and bonnie spend most of their time snuggled up together. bonnie is quicker to come out and investigate if i come drop some food in though if i haven't said it before, it's really hard to judge the wild bettas by photos you see online. i never would have bought betta coccina based on photos. you really need to see them live and in action. when i saw mark's tank full of b. coccina, i absolutely fell in love. those emerald eyes and that rich wine color...ooh ;D
