Here is my tank. I purchased Toby IV (there was not a Toby II or III) on 7/20/05 from Petco. Toby I was purchased on 7/19/05 and died on 7/20/05. I thought the fish that had the cleanest container (no poop) and skinny was a good sign. Well it was not lively when I bought him, so the shock of a new tank must of did him in. Well back to Toby IV.... 1 gallon tank w/light, under gravel filter tossed and replaced with a Penn Plax replaceable cartridge unit, hawkeye air pump, check valve, Java Fern that has just about doubled in size since 7/20, river rock. I just added the Hydor 7.5w heater (black thing) and the thermometer today. The water was 65 degrees before the heater added. That explains why Toby IV was a little slow. He seems more active tonight (3 hours after the heat went on). I run the light (timer) from 2pm to 12am. I am monitoring the tank's temp to determine how many cycles the heater may need to run, if I needed to be operated that way to keep a steady temp. With the price of oil, my home is going to be cool, so the heater is needed for Toby IV. Tank: Toby IV: Toby IV's diet - Bloodworms

I'm sure he enjoys the tank upgrade. How have you found the Hydor heater to work? Does it keep a fairly stable temperature? Live plants are a great addition to a betta's tank and java ferns are pretty easy to care for. That's nice that yours is doing so well!

The heater works great. The trick to keep the temp consistent is to shut the heater off when the tank light goes on. I have both on separate timers to do this.
