I am looking for a female betta. I have looked in some pet stores but they don't have any or they look shady. Where is the best place to get a healthy, nice female?

That an easy question. The best place to get a healthy, nice female is from a betta breeder.
Here's a few ways to find a breeder.
(1) Do a Google search and try to find a local beeta breeder.
(2) Visit the IBC website, locate a chapter near you. Contact the local chapter and find out who has females available.
Where are you located?

I am located in western Indiana. It is around Terre Haute.

(2) Visit the IBC website, locate a chapter near you. Contact the local chapter and find out who has females available. There are many betta breeders in Indiana. Try contacting a local betta club. Sometimes breeders will be happy to give you fish that they are no longer going to breed...sometimes there are extra young fish that they don't need.

I got my female betta at walmart. They had more females than males. She is very healthy and has been living a month now.

I too get my female Bettas at Walmart. They usually have a fair selection of females and they keep them in bigger cups than most stores so they are usually healthier too. Females rock and eat a lot too!

If you live in Canada near a Big Al's Aquarium shop, then you might be able to find some beautiful females there, not to mention the more exotic (and expensive!) breeds. My local one does not carry any veil tales, only females and the better breeds. They do keep their bettas in small bowls (no cups), but their bowls always seem to be very clean and the betta supply runs out quickly at the store near me. Plus, this is the one place where I trust the staff.
If I didn't have a male, I would probably go for a female next from this store. They have very beautiful fish in a range of colors. Saw a red one who liked my husband. If I bought her, I would have named her "Big Bertha" for her size and the way she was "flirting". Oh well...next tank maybe.

I have two, Penelope and Petunia, and I got them both at Pet Supermarket (I think they are a nationwide chain. I'm in Florida and they are like a rash down here). They are both happy, healthy and quite amusing. One likes to 'bite' fingers
