Poor little hardy fish. It would be so much happier if, as a species, they just dies if things weren't right. A quick death would be preferable to a slow lingering death in cold, clammy-feeling water.
I used to be as bad as anyone. My first betta was kept in a bettahex! He survived for 3 years and I only changed the water when it turned green! I have learned a lot since then. (And I still have a lot to learn, I know.) The best fish keeping tip I can give is "Learn about your fish's natural habitat." If you can "improve" on it, so be it. (Rice patties tend to be murky and muddy, bettas don't really NEED that part.) But do not try to get by without getting as close as you can. Thailand is tropical. The temperature there stays right around 80, with altitude variation, of course. If your house is the same, you don't need a heater. More power to you. Me, I like my house at around 72, helps me breathe, asthma, you know...anyway...I do need a heater. I vowed never to subject another fish to what poor Feathers went through before I learned.
Those of you who think you can have your air conditioning and not have a heated tank too...pray you are never abducted by a yeti who keeps humans as a hobby. I am sure a 4ft x 4 ft x 8 ft ice cave would not be incredibly comfortable.
