A new Walmart opened a few weeks ago near my house, so I thought I'd go down and check out their Betta selection. Turns out they get new fish on Tuesdays, and it being a Monday, they were down to one sick-looking Betta. I peered into his tiny cup and saw that the water was a foggy, murky brownish color. I summoned the pet-area employee and showed him the water, and he told me that they were following instructions -- 1/4 water change every ten days! I sort of went into lecture mode (oops I'm a passionate person...) and the man told me that he really did not know that the fish needed more water, clean water, things like that... and that he felt bad to be passing that information onto customers. I asked if I could make up little care cards to go home with new Betta purchases and he said sure, as long as they were free ;D Now everyone who buys a Betta at my local Walmart will get real instructions on how to take care of the fish, beginning with getting them out of those little cups and into a proper 1 gallon+ tank. For whatever reason, that made my week when he first said yes, I thought about how I was going to tell you all when I got home. Hehe. Yay. I also bought that one fish and named him Ember. He's looking a little better already and I'll be babying him until he's back to full health.

Excellent! I am glad to see that you took your stance with him and came away the victor - along with all the bettas they'll be selling from this point forward Crystal

way to go!
A new walmart supercenter opened up here a week ago. I know a few people there that work in the office.
So maybe I can ask to make the same thing for new betta owners.

Hi! I wish they did not come in little cups. The Walmart I have, they are all stacked together near a little sink. IN about the size of margerine containers... bigger than at the fish store where I actually got my betta I have now... small drinking glass sized. A dollar store near me is selling glass "goldfish bowls" 1/2 gallon- and even bettas would be a heck of a lot happier in those than in a little cup... I know it is not 2-3 gallons- can a fishshop- do any really give every new betta that kind of space? Has anyone seen any store go to that effort to show new owners what they really need? Maybe once you get your info sheet together, maybe you can post it so we can download it and put it in our Walmarts. The guy that caught my goldfish for me did not know a thing about fish. Sadly the goldfish did not last long... and I cleaned the bowl, researched and waited a week or more before getting the betta. I am going to get him a bigger tank- maybe a free one from a friend... they moved to a new house and may be done with fish. I don't know- maybe if I knew how much are they really needed before hand, I would have not gotten the betta, but I am hooked on him now- and want to do him right. I even pre washed my hands well and used a hand to put him into his bowl... and not that green net I bought... talk about overcoming something. LJ

I agree with you Sillyca. It is sad to see those poor fish suffer at the hands of ignorant or just cruel sales people. My local Walmart is the same way. However, my local pet store on the other hand keeps there bettas in 10 gallon community tanks and are very knowledgeable about the fish that they sell. I only buy my fish from them because I know that the fish are well taken care of and are happy little guys and girls.

its so cruel to keep them in drinking glass size cups . The betas at the Petco where i get my suplies are kept in those, and they all have ragged fins or are sick! sometimes they even leave dead ones just lying on their sides in the cups...notyourangel, do you have copies of the cards you made? maybe i could distribute some...

If you go to the homepage of this website, you will find a one page care sheet on bettas.
