I love astronomy and named my male betta Pluto after my favorite planet. Pluto is the most unique of all the planets in our solar system. It is different from the other planets in many ways and is mysterious because we don't know a lot about it yet (NASA is working on sending a probe there in the near future! ;D). When I got my betta, he was unique and different from all the others at the store. He is my favorite color (a mix of blue and purple) and his pectoral fins stand out because they are red. He was the most unique betta there, so I named him after the most unique planet!

Betta Pluto - Your guy sounds gorgeous! Any possibility of posting a pic? Are you planning on adding any more planets to your pets? I suppose naming a red Betta 'Mars' is a bit cheesy?

palepinkvase, I have a picture of Pluto in my yahoo photo album, if you want to see it. It's at f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/leonid8784/my_photosHis fins are doing better since they got shredded and seem to be healing and regrowing now! ;D I need to take a new picture of him and put it in there. I don't have any other pets named after planets, but a few of my hermit crabs do have astronomical names (Nova, Orion, and Leo). If I had any more room in my dorm for another tank, I'd try to find a pretty red male betta and name him Mars...that would be fun to have Pluto and Mars. And I could get a pretty blue green one for Neptune...the possibilities are endless...lol. My mom got a male betta after I got mine and she didn't know what to name him, so I told her that maybe she could name him Charon, which is the moon of Pluto. So we do have a Pluto and Charon! *Amelia*

I just found a diagram of the anatomy of the betta and I realized that it's not Pluto's pectoral fins that are red, it's his ventrals that are red. Now I think I have all the fins straight. *Amelia*

Pluto is QUITE the handsome guy! I am glad to hear that his fins are on the mend. What about that white spot? is it gone? Not to encourage you, but having Pluto, Mars, and Neptune would be fun, as well as a Jupiter and Saturn. A female named Venus. I don't think I could name a fish Uranus- too many silly jokes to hear over and over! Are you studying Astronomy? I noticed your Yahoo name is Leonid. I am particularly fond of the Leonid Meteor Showers.

palepinkvase, I'm still not sure what the strange spot is. I hope it's nothing serious. It's been there for months and I just can't figure out what it is. Yea...having a betta for all the planets would be fun. Except you're right about Uranus...I don't think I could name a fish that either. I too, like the Leonid meteor shower. The Leonid meteor shower is actually what got me interested in astronomy. I had to write a speech in high school and didn't know what to do it on, and I saw an article on the Leonid meteor shower in a magazine and decided to do it on that. Ever since then I have loved astronomy. I am not studying it...I wanted to, but the university I go to (Texas A&M) doesn't have it. I was studying physics, but I hated doing endless math problems...it just wasn't fun. So now I'm a philosophy major (I absolutely love philosophy...especially philosophy of science!! ;D) and want to go into scientific journalism after I graduate and write for a magazine like Astronomy or Sky and Telescope. I'm actually writing science articles for the newspaper at my school right now...it's lots of fun (especially the astronomy ones)! Sorry my post got to be so long... What got you interested in the Leonid meteor shower? *Amelia*

I have always liked looking up at the sky and stars. When I was little, it was so cool to be able to get up and go outside in the middle of the night and watch for the Leonids. I thought about studying Astronomy until I found out about all the physics and math **GAG**!! A few years ago while driving home late at night I actually got to see the Aurora! It was AMAZING, especially being in TN. Long, blue-green curtains of light undulating in the sky. I stopped my car and just stared up for the better part of an hour! Writing about science sounds fun, especially writing for the average reader. Is there a weblink to your school newspaper? I would really enjoy reading your articles.

I've never seen an aurora before. But then again I have never seen snow either (Texas weather ). I really want to travel north sometime to see an aurora (and snow...lol)...the pictures of auroras are absolutely stunning! I definitely want to see one in person...it would be truly awe inspiring! To read my articles, you can go to www.thebatt.com and there's a "back issues" link in the left column. You can then click on the link to use the search engine on the website. In the "Author:" "-other-" blank, type Amelia Williamson and it will come up with a list of all the articles I've written. The sci/tech articles run every Tuesday and Thursday and I usually write once a week or every other week. *Amelia*

I found thebatt.com and read your article about the solar-powered car project. You are a good writer. I have bookmarked the page and will keep up on your stories. You should travel North and see some snow as well as the Aurora! I haven't been to College Station, but I have been to San Angelo and the Dallas/FW area. Is College Station similar?

My first betta was named Doofus or Doofy (RIP) for short because he did silly things like zip arounds the tank and then headbump his tankmate Cornelius the Giant Columbian Ramshorn Snail and malke him fall off the side...his orginal name was going to be P.B. ( Pink and Blue) but it didn't fit... My boy Meenoi (RIP) was named "Little bear" in Thai...because he was small but feisty... Ludwig the Red and Green Butterfly male is named after the Ludwigia Plant because he looks like one of the leaves... Mali the red HM female has a Thai name that means " delicate flower" she is just a delicate, little sweetie... Raichu the yellow Super Delta male is named after Raichu on Pokemon because he is hyper and "electric" and Pikachu was so common... Angel the DT Turquoise female is named Angel because she is sweet and her DT reminds me of angel wings. Vegeta the Blue HM male is named after Vegeta on Dragonball Z because he is feisty just like the character. Sarai the green delta female's name means "Quarrelsome" because she is a bully to the other females...she is the alpha female... Sakura the cambodian DT female means "cherry blossom" because of her coloring and feminine nature.... Raindrop the blue cambodian female because her tail is light blue and I live near Seattle so anything related to rain fits...LOL Crush the orange super delta male-he's neamd after Orange Crush Soda... and his sister Shasta the orange female is named after Shasta Orange Soda.... Cerelean the blue round tail female...because of her coloring...and I like the sounds of the name....

My newest guy (the bent fish from WalMart) has been named Finnian - after the movie 'Finnian's Rainbow' as he has kept changing colors and well, giving a fish a name with 'fin' in it is cheesey enough to make me smile! Finnian does have the distinction of having a nickname, 'Bentley' conferred upon him by ABM.

palepinkvase, Thanks for reading my article! The sci/tech section runs on Wednesdays this semester. I usually write every other week or every 2 weeks since there are 2 other writers. I just wrote one this past Wednesday on the new observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope that observes in the infrared. It found all kinds of interesting stuff! I love writing about astronomy! ;D I've never been to San Angelo, but I have been to the Dallas/FW area. College Station is really small...a lot smaller than Dallas/FW. It's basically just A&M University and the little strips around it. Bryan is really really close to College Station and Houston (where I'm from) is about an hour and a half away. Have you lived in TN all your life? I've never been there. What is it like there? *Amelia*

Bubba got his name because he jumped when I picked up his tiny cup to get a better look at him and he scared the *beep* outta me...I jumped and put him down fast. I liked the fact that he was fiesty (sounded like a good sign) and after that how could I not get him lol...I said something like it's okay Bubba. I said Bubba, looked at my husband and that was it. It also fits because there's a character named Bubba (who I love) in a Dennis Lehane series that's mean, tough, and someone you don't want to cross, but really sweet. Simon is Simon because I've always liked that name. There was also this British kids show about a boy named Simon who could draw things with chalk and they'd come to life (the theme song stayed in my head for days when I decided to name Simon...to the point where I almost changed his name .

Hello all! I'm new and thought I would add how I named my bettas. Currently I have Epsilon who is named after a great star. She looked like a blue star when I got her. My other female, Vendetta, is a double tail and kind of a spaz sometimes. The name just popped into my head as I watched her. Last female is Dijon. She looks like a mustard gas geno so mustard.. Dijon. My males are a little more complicated. I'll start with Elvis who just died 2 days ago (RIP) who was the color of blue suede. Then We have Lou whose diamond shaped scale create an ilLOUsion on his sides. Then with a Lou I had to have a Huey.. so along came him. Then we've got Vegas because he is so bright and flashy. And Spangle... he is a red white and blue (star spangled) marble. Finally we have my Plakat male named Hennessee. He was sold to me as a female but it was apparent almost immediately that this one was way aggressive and not girly at ALL! One of my friends got in a fight with one of his friends after they had been drinking Henneessee so I named him that to remind them not to drink that again or they'll end up mean just like him! Well... I think thats everyone. I'm getting a pair of royal blue breeders and a dark turquoise male and a red/purple/trans black male to show in the IBC soon so I'll be back at naming again!
