Has anyone else noticed this or is it just my betta. Ever since i put my heater in he either likes to swim around the heather or float in one spot and stare at it. Also can they burn themselves on it if they touch it. I know that they can get warm.
My tank is a 3.3 gallon tank with a 50 watt heater in it that keeps the temp perfectly at 80 without variation (have to set the temp on the heater at 75 though). The heater is at the opposite end of the tank to the temp thermometer (flotes in the tank).

I'm not sure, but one of mine likes to sleep on top of the heater The other one started to poke the heater a little when I first placed it in his house, but he gave up quite soon - the heater didn't flare back!

My betta Splashes loves getting his exercise throughout the day by doing laps around the heater! ;D He goes between it and the side of the tank near the top of the heater, then loops down around and under the bottom of the heater. Funny fish!

My guys like to swim around thheater too. I was concerned about it once so I stuck my finger in the water and touched it, it was warm but not enough to burn, only when a heater is on and out of the water do they get hot enough to burn(unfortunatly found that out the hard way).

I just recently bought a visi therm submersable 50 watt heater from walmart ($15.99 cdn). I am using it in a 3.3 gallon tank and i find it to be highly reliable. also it is for a 5-10 gallon tank. It always keeps the water at 80 degrees. If you do get it make sure you watch it for a few hours. I assuming since it is in a 3.3 gallon tank is the reason i set it to 76 to get 80 degrees in my tank. In a larger tank i also assume that you set it on the normal number settings.
