Amanichen - thanks so much for responding. I thought anyone reading my descriptions might think I was nuts (my boyfriend did), but if I trust my instincts, they are usually right. It is hard for me not to just grab him and exert some gentle pressure to help him relieve himself, but of course, I would never do it. I called my vet - he apparently doesn't handle fish. I called my local tropical fish store to see if they could help, but they don't want to take the chance. I hate to think what I might find when I get home from work. I tried the pea at the very beginning of this episode, and he wouldn't touch it. He ate last night, but is definately not eating today. I will try the pea again (I'll try anything). As for the Kanacyn, I'm of a like mind with you, it sure can't hurt. While I'm sure Trigger's dire problem is pretty unique, I hope that this thread will be helpful to anyone, with any kind of fish, understand the important nature of variety of diet. This site has excellent recommendations. I will have more tomorrow, and again, thank you all for your help and support.

If you want to try the squeezing you can, but be sure you're doing it in the right place. Realize, that if he did have a wound before, it might be a problem. So again, it's your choice.
Most vets don't deal with fish, so if you have a local university you may want to get in contact with an ichthyologist...if there are any there. It's difficult for the average hobbyist to get in touch with someone who's willing and qualfied to do surgery on a fish.

Arriving at home last night, I absolutely dreaded opening the front door. I was sure I'd find Trigger virtually exploded. Unbelievably, the intense swelling around his anus had disappeared. However, he is back to being nose down in the plant. I really believe that the swollen tissues, a tumor, something, has totally blocked him and he cannot relieve himself. This morning there appeared to be the beginning of more yellow stuff from his wound site. He is not eating, but every so often rouses himself for a rapid round of the tank before allowing himself to drop to the bottom. I imagine the Kanacyn helped with the swelling yesterday. I am heartsick. I have had to work through my lunch hour today, so I will have nothing more until tonight. I continue to hope for miracles.

I lost Trigger this weekend. This was the most horrible death I've ever seen, and if I believed in taking matters into my own hands - I would have. I took him to my local Tropical Fish Store and the owner said there was no doubt about it, this was from internal organ failure - not disease. I vacuumed out about 5 gal of water, pulled out every decoration and plant, scubbed the filter. He said none of that was necessary since he was SURE there was no contagin, but I felt better doing it anyway. Adolph became very erratic when Trigger died, darting all around the tank when I removed him. After an hour or so of darting, he settled to the bottom and laid still (totally abnormal behavior for him). So, Sunday, I went back to the store and decribed it to the owner, and he said Adolph was probably depressed, having never been alone in his life. He suggested a companion for him, so I got (2) Shubukins that he seems pleased to share the tank with. I gave Trigger a burial (he was 12 inches long and took a shoe box). Such a good fish, I really miss him...

Thank you so much, ABM. I have advised so well during this whole thing, I know that without it, Trigger may not have had the week he did that was good for him. That makes me feel a little better.
